Golfing by the Elite

A local golf tournament crowned some of Cayman’s elite golfers.

The 2007 Cayman Islands Golf Association (CIGA) Amateur Golf Championship was held 9-10 June. The tournament, sponsored mainly by Elite Marble & Granite, was hosted at the Links Golf Club at Safehaven.

Conditions on the day were ideal and allowed good scores to be had.

Titles were on the line in the various divisions. The winners of each division are as follows: Joel Dodson – Men’s, Samantha Widmer – Women’s, Robert Chilman – Men’s Senior and Dan Anderson – Men’s Net.

There were also winners in the flight divisions. Andy Newton won the Men’s Super Senior, Stephen Duval won Men’s A, Karole Szucs won Men’s B and David Self won Men’s C. Paula Chilman won the Ladies A Flight.

The division winners all had outstanding rounds. Dodson had a first round score of 75, Widmer had scores of 78 and 77 gross, Robert Chilman had scores of 77 and 81 gross and Anderson had scores of 80 and 83 gross (with a net two-round total of 139).

The tournament also saw a host of memorable performances. Paula Chilman shot rounds of 60 and 64 net, with the first round being the lowest score at any event in the history of the CIGA.

Trent Riggins was runner-up to Dodson with rounds 78 and 76 gross. Second-runner-up Chris Butcher also did well. His round of 75 matched that of Dodson for the lowest round of all the men.

The CIGA took time to thank its many sponsors for their support. Among the nearly twenty sponsors mentioned were food suppliers Pirates Den and hole sponsors Bank Austria Cayman Islands, The Beaver and Calypso Grill.
