Today’s Editorial June 26: Get into summer overdrive

Summertime and the living is easy.

That’s the tune playing in the heads of most youngsters these days as school doors close and summer vacations begin.

For kids of all ages summertime means no class work, no homework, plenty of time to sleep in and stay up late – freedom.

For many parents and guardians summertime means worry and concern that there is no class work, no homework, plenty of time to sleep in and stay up late and too much freedom.

While children attend schools parents and guardians can pretty much be assured that students are learning, being kept busy and out of trouble.

In the summer working parents can’t always be assured that little Johnny or Susie are doing what’s right.

We’ve already had instances of students hanging around downtown on Fridays after school has let out.

In one instance a gang of boys wearing their high school uniforms attacked a man.

In another, girls were approached by police who had to break up fighting.

Instead of setting your kids up for trouble, find things for them to do this summer.

There are many summer camps on offer from sporting organisations to the National Gallery.

But there are other options too.

The Cayman Islands offer the perfect place to take a nature hike. Students can spend the summer getting to know first-hand the flora and fauna this great country has to offer.

A natural fit for kids and summer is fishing. Any child with fishing line, hooks and bait can wade into the shallows of the Caribbean Sea and catch fish. Even if they come up empty handed, the day hasn’t been lost to idleness.

Summer is the perfect time for students to spend time with their elders, either at their homes or lending a hand at a nursing home.

Older people get joy out of interacting with younger people. Senior citizens have so much wisdom and skills to offer younger people.

Plan a vacation right here at home for you students. Tourists pay a lot of money to come to our home and visit attractions. Explore what’s in our own backyard.

Summer doesn’t have to be a time when kids get into trouble or start experimenting with drugs and alcohol.

And it shouldn’t be a stressful time for parents and guardians, either.

There’s plenty to do here this summer.

Take the time to explore Cayman.
