A man who had three fingers on his right hand sliced off by a table saw at a George Town apartment complex had the fingers surgically reattached at a Miami hospital the following day.
The accident happened around 8.45am Wednesday on Boilers Rd. just off Church St. in the vicinity of the George Town waterfront and Ugland House.
Officials with the Department of Employment Relations said the 55-year-old man was using the table saw during a job at the complex. They could not immediately state what company he was working for, or the specific nature of the job.
The victim in the accident was taken to hospital on island and was flown to Miami shortly afterward. Doctors are trying to determine whether he’ll regain full use of his fingers.
Safety and health officer Rohan Marshall said the owner of the company the man worked for flew to Miami with him.
Police responded to the scene Wednesday morning but quickly determined what happened was an accident and did not investigate further.
Mr. Marshall said the incident was classified as an industrial accident, which prompted the occupational safety and health probe.
He said these kinds of occupational mishaps have declined in Cayman recently, and the government has put more emphasis on thoroughly investigating them.
‘Years ago, the accident would happen, they’d go: ‘it’s unfortunate’ and walk away,’ Mr. Marshall said. ‘Our job is to reconstruct the accident; figure out what went wrong, how to correct it, and then how to use it as part of our training programme.’
