The National Parenting Programme is launching a new initiative focusing on the importance of providing a healthy breakfast for preschoolers.
The group will be making presentations at two George Town schools for parents, children and childcare providers.
The initiative encourages parents to start each child’s day with a healthy breakfast compared to the rushed, sugary and non-nutritional options that children are often given, said a GIS press release
Organizers also stress that, from a young age, the choice of what children eat at home or take to school should be a sensible decision made by the parents, and not by the children.
The school sessions will include food demonstrations and information shared by a nutritionist from Chrissie Tomlinson Memorial Hospital; presentations by the Early Childhood Unit; and Hobbies and Books staff will demonstrate fun snack tips from kids’ cookbooks.
A healthy, fast breakfast will be catered for parents and children attending the breakfast sessions.
The presentations will also include ‘fun and easy snack ideas’ and ‘the importance of good food in children’s playtimes’.
Campaign organisers note that many parents settle for a ‘quick-fix’ breakfast of chips, candy and sodas. These common options provide a temporary sugar rush, which could hinder a child’s concentration and learning at school, and negatively affect their physical development.
They note healthy breakfasts can be prepared at home in a few minutes. Quick, healthy items include juices, fruit, cereal and eggs. Many snack items, such as sandwiches and vegetable sticks, can also be prepared the evening before.
There are also numerous fast, fun alternatives for breakfast as well as snacks and lunches – many of which are available in smaller children’s sizes. These items, especially if bought in bulk, are also easier on the household budget than purchasing meals or snack foods each day.
