Digicel off to a flying start in co-ed softball

The Digicel Chuggers started their season with a convincing 30-15 victory over UBS in co-ed softball action at the Field of Dreams Sunday morning.

Wearing their new bright red Digicel jerseys, the Chuggers looked as good as they played.

‘I think the jerseys definitely helped,’ said Chuggers coach Alan Markoff. ‘I believe the glare from them blinded the UBS team in the field.’

Chuggers utility man Shawn Wilcox liked the new jerseys, too.

‘They remind me of my pyjamas,’ he said. ‘I can go home and go straight to bed in these.’

The Chuggers offence was the story of the game, as they batted around the first three innings and opened up a 23-0 lead.

Defensively, Digicel unveiled their new all-girl infield. Addie House, playing the hot corner for the first time, turned a great force play to second base that had the whole team pumped up.

The Chuggers also got a surprising performance in centerfield by Mark ‘The Wall’ Wallace, who has exclusively played the infield in the past six seasons.

‘Oh, I can play anywhere I’m needed,’ said Wallace after ranging far to his right to make a shoestring catch.

UBS captain Ryan McGuire said his team was short several players who were either injured or sick.

‘If Basia (Pioro) had been able to play, I’m sure we would have won,’ he said after the game, noting that his slugging second baseman had the sniffles before the game.

Ligers win first game

In its first game in franchise history, the newly formed LOM/CayBrew Ligers defeated the relentless Master Batters 11 – 8 in co-ed softball action at the Field of Dreams Monday.

By the end of the second inning, it looked like the Ligers were going to run away with the game after building up a 9 – 1 lead. Colin ‘Little Hurt’ Wilson and Tim ‘Rusty Wheels’ Thiessen led off the game by stretching what looked to be singles into back-to-back inside-the-park homeruns.

In the second inning the Ligers continued their mastery of the aluminum sword by batting through the order, recording another seven runs.

From the 3rd inning on, it was a case of the Master Batters trying to claw their way back into the game. They came close, but in the end, it was the Ligers’ solid defense that won the game, highlighted by a miraculous run-saving shoe-string catch in right field by Jim ’40 is the new 30′ Anderson and by Joe ‘Tylenol’ Michalski, who, after providing starting pitcher Brian ‘Big Bat’ Louwerse with some much needed pain relief by replacing him in the 4th inning, hurled two clutch strike-outs in the nail-biting 7th inning.

After the game, Sandra ‘Magnet’ Karapita, the Ligers first baseman, was overheard saying that it was a great team effort on all fronts, including the stellar play of the newly converted cricket and rounders stars Lee ‘Bare-Hands’ Blount and Kate ‘All-Business’ Cuming.

However, Sandra did state that perhaps in the Ligers next game, Lee and Kate might want to consider loosening their vice grips on the bat after they’ve hit the ball.

In other action on Monday, Watler’s Standing Seams improved to 2-0 on the season with a 17-12 win over KM Ltd.

The bats came alive for Watler’s Standing Seams in the first inning with all batters coming to the plate resulting in a 5 to 1 lead.

Watler’s defence held strong for the first two innings. KM made a comeback in the third scoring 6 runs to take a 7 to 6 lead. Watler’s regained the lead in the forth with three runs and exploded in the fifth inning scoring 6 more for a lead of 15 to 8 after five and they cruised to the victory from there.

Brad Dunn had the hit of the game in the fifth for Watler’s. He had injured his hamstring beating out a throw to first in the forth inning and was limping badly, but with no replacement he remained in the game. With two out and runners on first and second he crushed the pitch to the left field fence. Although he was only able to hobble safely to first he scored both of the runners.

Ken Bell had great game at the plate going 5 for 5 for Watlers.
