Fuel argument old

CUC again felt the need to clarify the reasons behind the high cost of electric bills.

The procedure of using fuel factor adjustments is customary in the industry world wide and therefore we have to accept it. I can only imagine what would happen if we ask the government to oblige public and private sector to raise or lower salaries according to a customary fuel adjustment.

The cashiers at CUC in very polite and understanding fashion were promptly telling customers to make sure they double their efforts to save energy. In fact the CUC campaign is there to teach us to conserve energy because it not only saves us money, it also helps protect the environment.

It all sounds funny to me.

I thought they make a profit by selling energy and the more they sell the better for CUC. In any case their saving tips basically are divided in two groups.

For one group there is the buying of the latest energy saving devices in existence, insulate your home with the best products available, service your four A/C units monthly, put double pane tinted windows and use top quality cement blocks for all your six bedrooms and four bathrooms.

The people within this group however are not the ones usually affected by the fuel adjustment. For the rest of us the tips boil down to: do not use A/C, open windows, use just fans if you are hot (and do not move!); keep lights off for as long as possible; use energy saving bulbs that last 10 years in every lamp you own and you will see a reduction of a dollar or two on your bill; wash your clothes while showering; use solar energy as dryer (hang your clothes out); go back to talking with family members or reading instead of watching TV; go to sleep as soon as it gets dark; use gas for cooking. Basically you have to live like in the 18th Century.

I think CUC needs to be setting the example by using the best methods to provide energy. Perhaps solar power; perhaps a combination of other methods. I am not sure what is available out there. What about buying the famous fuel from Venezuela? It is close and it is cheap. We do not have to get acquainted with Chavez, we just have to buy his fuel.
