At the ceremony, Minister of Health and Human Services Anthony Eden spoke of the continuing efforts to enhance the delivery of health care to the Sister Islands.
‘The setting up of this dialysis unit has been talked about for many years. Today I am pleased that we have taken that dream further and that this is now a reality.
‘This new state-of-the-art unit represents the commitment of the ministry and the Health Services Authority to the continuing development of specialised health care services in the Sister Islands to meet the growing needs of the population,’ he said.
Mr. Eden has called for an evaluation of the health care needs of the Sister Islands, due to the level of projected growth for Cayman Brac, which includes plans for a boom in cruise tourism, setting up new industries to allow migration from Grand Cayman and elsewhere to Cayman Brac and the opening of a new medical school.
Dr. Tamer Tadros, medical director of the HSA, spoke of the importance of Faith Hospital as part of the authority.
‘As we continue to review our strategic plan and our pursuit for recognition as a medical centre of excellence in the region, Faith Hospital will play an integral role in our long-term plans as we look to develop the facility as a specialist centre, in addition to the routine medical services currently provided,’ he said.
Dr. Tadros also elaborated on the concept of medical tourism.
‘As an international travel destination, we already attract a wide range of clientele. By enhancing certain services – for example, dialysis – we could attract significant business from these visitors whose decisions to travel are based on a country’s ability to care for their particular medical needs while on vacation,’ he said.
Among those attending the ceremony were MLAs Juliana O’Connor-Connolly and Moses Kirkconnell; Diane Montoya, chief officer at the Ministry of Health; Shirline Henriques, acting CEO of the HSA; Pastor Al Ebanks, chairman of the board of the HSA; and Dr. Orrett Thane, medical officer in charge at Faith Hospital.
