Insurance mogul Kim ‘The Boss’ Awe said he was deeply disappointed with the CIC Chuggers’ loss to Goldman Sachs on Monday night, calling it a ‘sad failure’.
The Chuggers gave up three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to lose a game they never trailed before that 9-8.
‘It was a tough one to swallow,’ said player coach Alan Markoff. ‘We’ll just have to do better for Mr. Awe in the future.’
Awe held a 45-minute closed-door management meeting after the game, and loud voices were heard coming from the room.
However, team spokesman Fergus ‘Slats’ Osgood denied rumours that Awe threatened to fire, cut, trade or send to Cayman Brac everyone from Coach Markoff to the team’s mascot, Chuggie the Beer-Drinking Dog.
‘Mr. Awe is just concerned that the Chuggers seemed distracted tonight,’ said Osgood. ‘He wants his players to have piece of mind, which is just what he wants for all of his insurance clients.
‘He suggested the players might want to consider mortgage protection as a way of giving them that piece of mind.’
Even though the Chuggers had trouble at the plate, in the field and on the base paths, they were still in a position to win. Pat Haag’s triple with the bases loaded in the fifth inning broke a 3-3 tie. Haag then scored on grounder by Markoff to give the Chuggers a 7-3 lead.
Things fell apart for the Chuggers’ in the field after that, as they made numerous errors in the final three innings to give the game away.
Markoff gave the game ball to Shawn Wilcox.
‘He’s the only one who didn’t screw up,’ he said.
Wilcox, playing in his first game in a decade, went one for one and the only ball hit his way in right field went over the fence.
‘You can’t fault him for that,’ said Markoff. ‘But I do expect him to contribute more in BPG’s for the rest of the season.’
Addie House once again hit the ball hard for the Chuggers, going one for two and is now hitting .571 for the year.
‘Addie strikes fear in the hearts of opposing pitchers, as well as in their shins, arms and heads because she usually hits the ball right up the middle,’ said Markoff.
The Chuggers have a week to regroup for their game against KMPG B next Tuesday at 8:30.
