The National Drug Council got a boost from the three Rotary Clubs on Grand Cayman.
Last week, the presidents of Rotary Sunrise (Chris Bowring), Rotary Central (John Elliott) and Rotary Grand Cayman (Raymond Whittaker) presented a US$22,000 cheque to the director and staff of the NDC.
The money will be used to purchase computers, said NDC director Catherine Chesnut.
‘Since the hurricane we have been struggling to get some normalcy. Our offices were completely destroyed. This donation will certainly help out both on an administration level and to get our programmes back on stream,’ she said in a press release.
Mrs. Chesnut noted that despite trying circumstances, the agency has been able to run a number of programmes. ‘We are currently working with the young people who are in Eagle House and the adults in HM Northward, and we are preparing a programme for HM Fairbanks Prison that will be gender-specific.’
She said the Council will be going into the primary schools next month to re-start the drug education programme.
Rotary has asked the NDC to prepare a summer programme for young people to keep them occupied.
‘I think all of our organizations are keen to help the youth,’ said Mr. Elloitt. ‘Some of our donors have specified that we assist with youth programmes, which we are always pleased to do.’
