After the dust settled at the Ed Bush field in West Bay on Sunday, only two teams were left standing, Scholars International and Western Union FC.
It was a case of who wanted it more. Though Scholars seemed to effortlessly move into the final round with a 3-0 victory over Latinos the battle between George Town and Western Union was no such walkover.
From kick-off to the final whistle it was literally a battle on the field. During half time George Town coach Lee Ramoon, who brought back the famed number 10 for this match, could be heard barking orders at the players, trying to get moral up and the game going in a more favorable direction. By that time Western Union had already scored the first of four goals and George Town had failed to respond. It was still anyone’s guess what direction the match would go in.
David Reid started the entire affair landing Western Union’s first goal in the 18th minute to be followed by Kingsley Wellington in the 40th with the second. A minute later George Town’s Michael Wilks saw an opening and put in his team’s first goal. But the Western Union players, eager for the edge wasted no time, and within 10 minutes Charles Rowe scored their third goal. Two minutes later George Town’s Garth Anderson fired back. The score was now 3-2.
With time running out and wishing to seal the deal for certain Kemar Donnegan – nicknamed ‘Elephant Man’ for his platinum blond coiffure – scored Western Union’s fourth and final goal only 3 minutes after being subbed onto the field.
Western Union walked away the victors after handing George Town a well battled 4-2 defeat.
For the last two seasons Western Union has had close calls on the semifinal round, missing qualification by the proverbial inch. But this time the extra training and effort put in by Coach Morgan bore fruit.
So now the two will stand and ‘face the music.’ Scholars International and Western Union FC will face off on Sunday May 15th for the coveted CIFA Foster’s National League title.
