Car flag assists recovery

Drivers can now show their pride while helping rebuild the country.

Local company In Stitches has created a Cayman Islands car flag, with part of the proceeds being donated to recovery efforts.

The company presented the first of its new product line to Chief Secretary George McCarthy last week.

‘I hope that the entire community will band together to support this product,’ Mr. McCarthy said. ‘This gives us all the opportunity to demonstrate our national pride as well as to support our local economy and the ongoing recovery efforts.’

Part of the proceeds from the sale of the flags will be donated to the Cayman Islands National Recovery Fund and First Baptist Church’s ‘God’s Giving Grace.’ The flag sell for CI$16 each.

‘The idea for the flag came about following Hurricane Ivan when we noticed the Canadian linesmen proudly flying their country’s flag on their utility vehicles as they assisted with the recovery,’ said Nicholas Johnson, owner of the sewing company. ‘A number of residents commented that they wanted to fly the Cayman flag in the same manner, but the item was not available, so we set out to make it.’

To reproduce the Cayman Islands flag, Mr. Johnson had to first receive permission from the Governor-in-Cabinet. Once permission is granted, an annual fee is payable to the Cayman Islands Government.
