Police arrest three in West Bay raid

Detectives arrested two men and one female in a dawn raid in West Bay on Friday morning, seizing a handgun, ammunition, an armoured vest and a quantity of ganja.

The raids were made as part of ongoing investigations into a series of shootings that recently culminated in the 3 May wounding of Bjorn Ebanks of Sand Hole Road in West Bay.

‘We have had a number of suspects come up in our investigations as persons of interest,’ said Detective Chief Superintendent Derek Haines.

‘The officers from the crime squad spearheading the investigation organised the raid with a number of units and search warrants.’

Starting at 5am, 30 police from the Crime Squad, the Uniform Support Group, the Drugs Task Force, Customs and the K-9 unit searched five private West Bay homes and surrounding areas in the Logwood and Northwest Point areas.

‘The handgun looks like a .38 calibre, something in that range,’ Mr. Haines said.

A .38 calibre pistol and a quantity of ammunition was also found in the possession of Carlos Renton Russell, charged on 30 March with the same-day shooting death of Philip Watler in the emergency room at George Town Hospital.

The two arrested men were charged with possession of ganja with intent to sell. The woman was arrested for disorderly conduct. All three are West Bay residents.

‘We are still looking for other material,’ Mr. Haines said. ‘We have had a good and successful investigation and we anticipate more arrests in the future.’

He declined to speculate if the handgun was linked to the Monday night shooting of 21-year-old Ebanks at his West Bay home, where he lives with his parents, younger brother and younger sister.

‘We will send the handgun for ballistics testing, so it will take a little time. It’s too early to say,’ Mr. Haines said.

Four shots were fired at Mr. Ebanks, inflicting massive chest wounds and leaving him in critical, but stable, condition at George Town Hospital.

Two assailants, described by police as about five feet, six inches tall and dressed in dark clothing, were seen fleeing the scene.

The investigation continues.
