McCoy Prize exhibition opens Saturday

The winners of the fourth annual McCoy Prize competition and exhibition will be announced at the event’s opening reception at the National Gallery on Saturday, 28 May.

This year’s event attracted more than 30 participants in the three categories of fine art, fine-art photography and fine crafts, says a National Gallery release.

The release said that entries this year are diverse. Works exhibited are in a variety of materials including acrylic, oil, watercolour, wood and thatch. Entries range from the very modern in style to more traditional pieces.

The event will also feature a new collection of works by last year’s winners who, due to the prize rules, cannot enter the competition segment of this year’s exhibition.

The exhibited works of art have already been judged by a panel and the prize winners and commended artists will be announced at Saturday’s opening reception.

The release adds that the winners of each category will receive CI$1,500 cash prize with an additional education grant of CI$1,500.

The event is jointly administered by the Cayman Islands National Museum, the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands and Mr. Harris McCoy III.

Prize-winners normally sell or donate one of their works created within the year of receiving the Prize to the National Museum’s permanent collection to form part of the McCoy Collection.

This year, the event will also feature a 20-page catalogue published by the National Gallery, assisted by sponsorship from dms.

The McCoy Prize opening reception starts at the gallery’s Harbour Place location at 6pm. The evening will include live music and refreshments.

The exhibition runs through 27 July.
