Northern Caribbean Championships

The Cayman Islands National rugby team is scheduled to fly to the Bahamas this Saturday to participate in the Northern Caribbean Championships which this year doubles as the 2007 Rugby World Cup Qualifiers.

Cayman will embark on an ambitious schedule playing three games over a seven day period against the Bahamas, Jamaica and Bermuda.

The Southern Caribbean Championships are being held in August and the winners of the two tournaments will play off in September to decide the winner of the Caribbean region. The Caribbean victor will then play a three way home and away series against the USA and Canada next year.

The Cayman side has been preparing over the last several weeks and has played three warm up games against the Club’s Ineligible Players dubbed the ‘Rest of Cayman’. The National side lost the first game but steady improvement has been evident and they won the final two games with more convincing performances. Richard Adams, Cayman’s Director of Rugby, who is also a member of the playing team, commented that he was very pleased with the progress that has been made over the last few weeks.

‘We have introduced some new styles of play and while it took the boys a little while to adjust to these, the team is now starting to gel and we look forward to putting it all together for next week’s games,’ he said.
