Please allow me space in your newspaper to comment briefly on the appointment of Edna Moyle the sole representative of the good citizens and residents of North Side in the legislative Assembly of the Cayman Islands.
It is unfortunate that Mrs. Moyle has walked again on the people of North Side who voted for her in her landslide victory at the most recent election.
It will not be possible for her to represent the people of North Side as Speaker as in this role she should be impartial and not be cutting deals with the Government or the opposition.
As Speaker she will not be allowed to ask questions or move motions, debate any bills or seek amendments to bills in the interest of North Side.
The People Progressive Movement is being very hypocritical in this appointment as this was one of the two or three proposed constitutional amendments that the PPM refused to agree with the UDP on; that is, that the Speaker could be appointed from amongst the members or from the outside.
They aborted the whole constitutional modernization process over this issue by insisting that the Speaker not be appointed from among the members but come from the outside.
The PPM compounds this hypocrisy by selecting the Speaker from a single member constituency, therefore depriving North Side from any representation in the Legislative Assembly when they certainly had other choices from multiple member constituencies.
I feel sorry for all those North Siders especially those who campaigned so hard and so successfully for Ms Moyle.
