Water services to be expanded

Creation of a new utilities commission and expansion of water and sewerage works in the eastern districts highlighted discussions during Minister Arden McLean’s recent visit to the Cayman Water Authority, according to a Government Information Services press release.

The minister, accompanied by Permanent Secretary Carson Ebanks and Deputy Permanent Secretary Dorine Whittaker, toured the Red Gate headquarters last week. Water Authority Director Dr. Gelia Frederick van Genderen and her staff hosted the visit.

Mr. McLean said that the Water Authority’s 98-member staff represented one of the most progressive sections of government.

Referring to his own agenda of projects, he said, ‘I’m not here to stop your development. If anything, your role needs to be expanded and more equipment acquired to allow you to work faster.’

He noted that development of water connections to North Side and the remainder of East End are major objectives ‘to be completed in short order’.

Outlining his experience as a marine engineer and his work in the utilities industry, Mr. McLean said he appreciated the authority’s commitment to keeping the population healthy by providing adequate water and wastewater services to its 10,276 water and 255 sewerage customers.

‘You’ve done a magnificent job, and I look forward to working with each one of you. I’m particularly proud to know that I’ve been given responsibility for the Water Authority. I’ve followed your work over the years, visited workmen on various sites, and I’ve placed a lot of demands on your staff. You have always come through.’
