Members of the Legislative Assembly gather today to begin the task of making new rules and laws that will push the Cayman Islands forward.
At the helm is a new government coming off a successful election in which their manifesto promised openness and fairness to all.
Leading the session will be Speaker of the House Edna Moyle.
We pray that this session of the Assembly will be different from those in the past – that there will be an overall sense of respect from and for both sides.
There has been too much disrespect displayed in the hallowed halls of the Assembly in the past.
We’re confident that if anyone can restore decorum and professionalism to the Legislative Assembly, Madam Speaker Ms Moyle can.
It will be up to her to lead the Assembly in an orderly way; a task that she is more than capable of doing.
But it can’t be all on the shoulders of the Speaker.
Each and every member of the Assembly has a duty to conduct himself or herself in a professional manner.
There are many, many important issues that need to be addressed in this country, especially post-Ivan.
This session is not the place nor is it the time for members to push forth frivolous bills that have no chance of implementation or that have not been thoroughly thought out.
Each piece of legislation that is put forward must be well researched and consultants sought on all sides of the issue.
The issues must be thought out before government money is wasted in drafting laws.
The Members of the Legislative Assembly must remember that they are there because the people of the Cayman Islands put them there. It is their job – on behalf of the people – to see that the government’s business gets done in a timely and efficient manner.
And in doing so, all members must remember to respect each other, no matter which political pony they ride. Respect for the Speaker is most important.
We look forward to this session.
Energy is high following the election and debate promises to be informative as the two political parties push through their own agendas.
But while there are two parities in the House, members of both must come together for the good of the country.
We voted for it.
We deserve it.
