The Cayman Islands golf team might not have returned from the 49th Annual Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships in St. Kitts with any trophies, but the team put in a very good performance to record high finishes in many different categories.
This year’s women team, consisting of Samantha Widmer, Orapin Howe, and Judy van Liere, turned in an excellent performance, placing fifth in the George Teale Memorial Trophy. They were led by Samantha Widmer’s excellent performance who finished in first place individually with scores of 73, 75, 75, and 72 (11 over par). They fell just behind Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, and the Bahamas.
The men competing in the Hoerman Cup also played very well, as the team of Johnny Widmer, Robert Woods, Gary Carrol, Paul Wammer, and Michael Wight finished in sixth position. Johnny Widmer finished with the second best individual score at eight over, just two strokes behind Simon Merry of Trinidad and Tobago, who had the best score on six over after the four rounds.
The pairing of Robert Chilman and Bob Slatter competed in the Francis and Steele-Perkins trophy for senior men, and finished in seventh position.
In the Ramon Baez trophy for mid amateur, the Cayman team of Tracy Moore and Luke Matthew finished in eighth position. The tournament was a tough challenge for Cayman’s golfers, who have been limited in their available training facilities since Hurricane Ivan. A big thank you to our main sponsors Cayman Airways and Generali for all of their support. Next year’s competition will be in Jamaica, who will be hosting the 50th year of the competition.
