Saturday’s Raising the Roof Telethon, organised by CITN and the National Recovery Fund, was a huge success raising almost $2 million for the National Recovery Fund’s rebuilding efforts.
This success is thanks in part to the line-up of local entertainers who used their talents to entertain viewers and encourage support, according to a CITN press release.
Performers included Star Quest winner Kathleen Jackman. Kathleen hails from a musical family of five children, all of whom have inherited a love of music from their father. Throughout the years, she and her family, ‘The Celoria Family Singers’, have released five gospel and contemporary Christian music albums. In addition Kathleen sang with the First Baptist Church Adult Choir on Saturday evening. Pastor Dave Jorge, conductor of the choir, also led the telethon house band comprising of the First Baptist Strings/Horns.
Star Quest finalist, Isadora Ferrao put on a superb singing performance. Born in Harare, Zimbabwe, Isadora has been singing publicly since she was seven-years-old.
Another singer, this time from Jamaica, Marvin ‘Jalvent’ Smith sang an emotional accappella rendition of a number originally by Blessed Union of Souls called ‘I Believe’.
There was certainly a great mix of musical styles including jazz performances from Devon Edie with his solo on the saxophone as well as several numbers by the Cool School Band.
The ever-popular Heat, winners of this year’s Batabano Song Contest, whose present line-up includes singers Angie Manderson, Andrea Rivera and Vashti Bodden, performed several numbers throughout the evening.
Thirteen-year-old Jamesette Anglin sang like a seasoned professional, no doubt helped by the fact that she has been singing in public since the tender age of four.
There were many other performances during the evening including the rousing drum beats from Upkeepers of Rastafari, a stage performance by Broadway Class Act and poetry commemorating the wrath of Hurricane Ivan.
