Governor honours volunteers

The Governor, Mr. Bruce Dinwiddy, hosted a Red Cross volunteer appreciation Wednesday evening at his residence to recognise their contribution to the community.

The occasion was a great success with approximately 140 volunteers present.

The Governor opened the ceremony and gave a toast to the Red Cross, praising the volunteers for their efforts, particularly during Hurricane Ivan.

The Director of the Red Cross Jondo Obi continued the ceremony by giving out a number of awards.

Those who had been volunteering with the Red Cross for one year or more received certificates of recognition.

Volunteers who had sacrificed their time to work in a national shelter over the past year – spanning hurricanes Charley, Ivan, Dennis and Emily – were given plaques sponsored by DART management.

Fifteen volunteers were presented awards recognising their outstanding work over the year.

The evening also featured the launch of a new Red Cross polo shirt sponsored by CUC.

Chairman of the Red Cross Peter Milburn presented a painting to the Governor and Mrs. Emma Dinwiddy on behalf of the Red Cross staff and volunteers as a good-bye present.

The night wound up with Ms Obi presenting Mr. Milburn an award for Chairman of the Year in recognition of his efforts in organizing the annual golf tournament, the biggest fundraising event for the Red Cross.

Along with volunteers, guests included Red Cross sponsors such as Champion House Restaurant, Digicel, Cayman Airways, NAPA, Royal Bank of Canada, DART Management and CUC.

Government counterparts such as members of the National Housing Committee and other departments that work closely with the Red Cross were also present.
