Boatswain’s Beach expands

As Boatswain’s Beach prepares to open its doors in spring of 2006 with the completion of phase two, there are many other exciting activities going on behind the scenes.

According to a press release, last week Mr. Ken Hydes, Managing Director of Boatswain’s Beach was invited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association to give a presentation at their annual conference in Boston, Ma.

The presentation focused on the design, master plan and concepts behind the Boatswain’s Beach Park. Also in attendance was Ms Casandra Hibbert, General Manager of Marketing, Geddes Hislop, Curator-Terrestrial and Education Programs, along with Ms Catherine Bell, Curator-Marine and Research Programs.

There were also presentations made on other major projects currently in progress, including the Oklahoma City Zoo and the Georgia Aquarium due to open in November.

‘The AZA conference is an organized forum for scientists, researchers and professionals in the field to get together in workshops and seminars to discuss new education trends and releases, promote applicable services, brainstorm current issues and network with fellow professionals in the field.

‘AZA’s aim is wildlife conservation and its main objectives include the promoting of zoological parks and aquariums as a society that aspires to increase the betterment of human and natural resources, the developing of renowned ethical, academic, and scientific standards as well as the encouraging of inter-institution support and sharing of information,’ reads the release.

‘They also endeavor to alleviate problems with the exchange of animals between organizations along with the support of government agencies. Other goals include cultivating sound captive animal management practices, to expand public awareness on the need for conservation and preservation, as well as to become a leader in the area of preservation for animals on the border of extinction.’

Next big move

Becoming a part of this incredible organization with its mutual policies and ideals is the next big move for Boatswain’s Beach, it explains.

‘AZA represents to all intents and purposes almost every major professionally operated zoological park, aquarium, wildlife park, and oceanarium in North America. Aspiring to be a part of something greater, Boatswain’s Beach will be seeking accreditation with the AZA.

‘The procedure will include facility inspections, evaluations of education and conservation programs, as well as evaluations on safety procedures; research; veterinary and health care; collection; master plans; policies and procedures and guest services. This modus operandi will be conducted every five years. Noteworthy is the fact that out of 2,500 member facilities only 10 percent are accredited, thus accreditation would make Boatswain’s Beach a member of a small but yet prestigious organization.’

AZA represents such organizations as the four Sea World parks and Busch Gardens in Tampa, Florida. The opportunity to become affiliated and to network with other organizations in the field will reveal great value to Boatswain’s Beach, says the press information.

‘Determined to continue growing, learning and expanding its horizons, Boatswain’s Beach is already off to a great start with this motto in the forefront: ‘Thinking deeply, planning carefully, acting boldly’.’
