A new website was launched and a new agency – the Joint Communications Service – announced Thursday to improve the National Hurricane Committee’s communications efforts.
The site, www.CaymanPrepared.ky, is now the official source of emergency information for Cayman, those at a GIS press conference heard.
The website and other communication aids are managed by the JCS, an agency staffed by personnel from GIS, the Department of Tourism and the Portfolio of Finance and Economics.
JCS operations manager Pat Ebanks said the new moves would serve emergency planning for all types of disasters, not just hurricanes.
The website would deal with different phases of a disaster and through it people from overseas would be able to check on loved ones by posting messages, said Ms Ebanks.
A total of 15,000 Cayman Prepared kits for residents were also being printed and would be distributed to inform people of things they wanted to know, she told the press conference.
An overseas media kit had also been developed and all these things had been done to support better communication, she said.
‘This restructuring of the NHC to integrate communications in its emergency response will assist the JCS in working much more effectively in carrying out their roles,’ said Ms Ebanks.
JCS team member and PR manager for the Portfolio of Finance and Economics, Ted Bravakis said they had identified a number of key elements that communications devised and delivered by the JCS would consider.
Among those was proportionality – that risks were presented accurately and not exaggerated or underplayed, he said.
