Sporadic outages

Residents in West Bay at Town Hall Crescent experienced the longest power outage on the island due to Hurricane Wilma, according to Caren Thompson, CUC manager of corporate communications.

Electricity was down for about 200 customers from about 8.30pm Tuesday to about 9.15am Wednesday, she said.

‘A wire burned off and was in the street, but we weren’t able to do anything because of the high winds,’ Ms Thompson said.

CUC sent out a crew Tuesday night to check the damage but weather conditions prevented any repairs being made until Wednesday morning.

In central West Bay Road, about 900 customers lost power Wednesday while crews removed a loose power line.

Isolated outages were reported in Spotts Newlands, Gun Bay and East End between 5am and 7am Wednesday and these were repaired within a few hours.

In a few instances, trees were blown into the lines. At one location, a guy wire, which stabilises the electrical pole, blew loose.

‘Heavy winds and heavy squalls hampered repair operations in the early hours of (Wednesday) morning, but repair crews were on call from first light,’ she added.

For safety reasons, if winds are over 25mph CUC doesn’t allow employees to go up in the buckets to repair lines, Ms Thompson explained.
