Tip line helps fight crime

An arresting display to show they are back in the crime-cracking business was staged by Cayman Crime Stoppers.

In fact, it’s fair to say, the organisation – which started here in 1993 – has never actually been out of business.

But the phone had stopped ringing and the flow of information had dried up.

So it was that Crime Stoppers, under the guidance of new chairman Stuart Bostock, decided to relaunch itself with some new impetus.

At a press luncheon at the SeaHarvest Restaurant on Tuesday, the organisation set out to show its new chairman and board mean business.

And Mr. Bostock told those present that the phone, which had been silent for so long, had actually received several calls over the last few days.

‘Our main focus is to convince the community that 800-TIPS is a safe, secure and completely confidential means of providing information to the authorities,’ said Mr. Bostock.

The 800-TIPS number is not answered in Cayman and calls are not recorded, he stressed.

The objectives of the new board are to increase awareness of and promote the effectiveness of the organisation, he said.

‘But most importantly to provide a safe, secure and completely confidential medium for those who have valuable information they wish to provide to the law enforcement agencies,’ he added.

It was also announced that Cayman Crime Stoppers will be staging a ‘Teed-off About Crime’ golf tournament on 15 January at Britannia.
