Charles Ebanks is a legendary local fisherman who can readily tackle crime and angling records. With a father and siblings also into the sport, clearly fishing is in the genes of the ‘small fish killer.’
The latest member of his family to show skills with a rod is his son, Charles Junior. Charles ‘CJ’ Ebanks-Evans would be the big winner at last week’s Family Ties junior angling tournament. Put on by the Cayman Islands Angling Club, CJ would walk away with trophies, two rod and reel combos from Harbour House Marina and a book by renown conservationist Guy Harvey.
CJ would earn the accolades for a plethora of catches. He had the tournament’s heaviest wahoo (25 pounds) and the three heaviest yellowfin tuna catches (with weights of 30.9lbs, 24.4lbs and 18.9lbs). All were caught on board his father’s boat Patriot.
A number of other youngsters earned props. Andrew Cayasso, aboard Topless, had the heaviest barracuda as it weighed in at 7.9lbs (he would win a rod and reel combo). The other top spots belonged to two young men each with 7.5lb barracudas. Dylan Merren of Naut Sure would nab a Guy Harvey book while Zachary Bodden earned a third place trophy.
Andrew’s sister Alyssa Cayasso would have the second heaviest wahoo at 22.7lbs. She would catch the fish on her dad Larry Cayasso’s boat Topless. Steven Pennington, fishing with his father Billy Pennington on Get Ur Dun, would place third with a 18.2lb wahoo.
Ryan Barnett, aboard Anna Maria II, was first place in the tarpon release category and won fly fishing lessons for two with captain Ron Ebanks. Keiran Ebanks of Troublesome was second and earned Guy Harvey artwork.
In all 33 junior anglers took part with 13 boats registered. In addition to the aforementioned prizes there were also gift certificates handed out by Animal House, Smoothie King, Cayman National Bank and Atlantis Submarine.
