The Cayman Islands Golf Association is putting on a major event next weekend.
The 2011 President’s Trophy will be held on Saturday, 17 September at the North Sound Golf Club. Open to all members of the association and juniors with established handicaps, a total of 80 men and women will participate in the event.
Categories for this year’s tournament include the men and ladies open, juniors and senior men (50 and over). Trophy winners will be judged on the best 18-hole net scores.
Much of the focus for the upcoming tournament will be on the women’s segment. This summer the lady team of Samantha Widmer, Isabel Lawson and Emily Ribbins finished third in their section at the Caribbean Amateur Golf Championship in Trinidad. Widmer, who missed out on retaining her title as the Caribbean’s top amateur, states the President’s Trophy is a major event on the Cayman calendar.
“This tournament provides players of all levels of golf the ability to shine,” Widmer said. “Our association is dedicated to providing all eligible golfers with an avenue to showcase their talents in competitive play. The President’s Trophy allows those players with handicap indexes to play on a more even playing field with our top golfers.
“We are also hoping to encourage more juniors to come out and play this year. The future of golf in the Cayman Islands will be in the hands of our junior players and I hope that we can begin to establish a solid junior golf program to assist in developing more youngsters.”
Among Widmer’s competition at this year’s event is Isabel Lawson. She states her focus is on promoting golf rather than winning.
“Get out and start playing. My advice to new golfers is to head to the range and hit some balls or take a lesson from a golf pro,” Lawson said. “You can take up golf at any age. I did not start playing golf until I was 27.
“I would also like to encourage more women to come out and play in these tournaments. I have met so many great female golfers on the island which has encouraged me to become and even better player.”
The association would like to remind the public that it supports golf locally in all forms. As such it is not associated with one particular course on the island. The association provides its members with an opportunity to establish a United States Golf Association Handicap Index, which can be used for golf competitions and to measure improvement. In addition members support a number of developmental junior golf programmes and other ‘good for the game’ initiatives.
Morning and afternoon start times for the President’s Trophy will be available and the association asks that players please indicate their preference when entering.
The tournament has space for 40 in the morning (starting at 7:30am) and 40 in the afternoon (starting at 11:40am). Given the limited number of tee times, entries will be accepted on a first come basis.
Entry fee is $35 plus green fees (payable to the North Sound club). The entry fee includes one drink ticket and there will be food provided at the award ceremony immediately following afternoon play.
Deadline for entries is Thursday, 15 September as the draw for the tee times will be made on that day.
