Smokin’ barbecue for breakfast raised thousands for kids

Folks who love barbecue and helping a great cause found their way in droves recently to the Rooster 101 Country Fair and BBQ Challenge at Grand Harbour.

The popular event raised more than $3,500 for the local Kiwanis Club’s Buy a Kid Breakfast programme.

Topping the barbecue charts was the family team Loww and Sloww from Cayman, which won the $1,000 first prize for their smoked pork.

The Green Mountain Boys, a father-son team from Vermont who delayed their trip home to participate found that it was all worthwhile: they finished a close second.

Organisers said more than 300 people bought tasting tickets to sample smoked meats prepared by Cayman’s best amateur and restaurant barbecue chefs.

A panel of local celebrity judges, headed by Food Network personality Dr. BBQ, had the difficult task of selecting the winners.

In addition to the top barbecue winners, A People’s Choice Award was presented to a team of young Brazilians who roasted an entire side of local Caymanian beef in the traditional ‘costela no chåo’ method. The beef side was skewered with construction rebar and slow cooked over open flame for eight hours and then served off the bone to hundreds who stood in line to sample it.

The money raised from the day’s sales will provide up to 2,000 breakfast vouchers for at-risk children in Bodden Town, Prospect and East End primary schools.

Paul de Freitas, a Kiwanis spokesman, said that the proceeds of the Country Fair will account for about 10 per cent of the programme’s annual budget.

“Kiwanis wants to thank Rooster 101 and the many people that came out to support this event. An empty stomach is the greatest impediment to a child’s ability to learn. Our ability to overcome this challenge was greatly enhanced by this wonderful event,” he said.

Cheryl Birch, sales and marketing manager of Rooster 101 said the company looks forward to “repeating the success of this event again in the very near future.”
