Discount Liquors hit by robbers

A package store in central George Town was hit by two armed robbers in daylight Thursday afternoon, according to the business owner.

Robert Hamaty of Tortuga Rum Company, which also owns Discount Liquors in George Town’s Pasadora Place on Smith Road, said two masked men entered the store around 5pm Thursday and took both cash registers inside.

“They put a gun in the [cashier’s] face and told her, if she didn’t give them the money, they’d shoot her,” Mr. Hamaty said.

The same liquor store was hit in a robbery last year, according to Mr. Hamaty – whose stores in George Town and West Bay have been targeted by robbers several times in 2010 and 2011.

“Thursday’s not the busiest day there, but at 5pm they probably made off with a good amount of cash,” he said.

Royal Cayman Islands Police were on scene of the incident Thursday afternoon and the police helicopter was up in the area searching for suspects. There was no immediate word of any arrests.

Police said the suspects ran out the back of the shopping mall location toward Windsor Park. Both men were described as about 6′ tall with light brown complexions, wearing black hoods, masks and gloves.

No shots were fired and no one was hurt in the robbery.

  1. Bubba, I think you will find that on the contrary, this country is full of clowns and comedians, hence why there are stories about fully grown men shooting each other, people trying to rob banks when the door is locked, people holding up pizza places with machetes for money (oh yeah, and a 2 litre soda). To address the ‘grow up’ comment, I saw an error I had made, and I corrected it – which is about as grown up as it gets.

Now, unless you have something of interest to say about this story, why don’t you just not bother replying to this.

The fact these two robbers held up a liquor store with a gun, speaks volumes for the desperarion of these idiots. They’re willing to risk 10yrs plus in jail, for an amount of cash most people would earn in a week or two at most!
