Dead teen was due in court

Case adjourned pending death certificate

Jason Durran Christian, 18, was scheduled to appear in Grand Court on Friday on a charge of possessing an imitation firearm with intent to threaten violence.

But the teenager was fatally shot last Monday night, during an incident in George Town that left another young man seriously injured (Caymanian Compass, 21 September). His death was the fourth of five gun killings in Cayman in nine days.

Crown Counsel Marilyn Brandt told Justice Charles Quin he would be aware that, “in the current climate we’re in,” the defendant was now deceased. She said the Crown had not yet been able to obtain a death certificate and asked for another mention date.

Once a death certificate is attached, the file can formally come off the court list, she said. Justice Quin set the next date for 14 October.

Christian was charged following an incident in Windsor Park in December 2010. Records show the matter first came to Summary Court on 2 August. It was mentioned again on 30 August and then, on 13 September, sent to the Grand Court. No plea had yet been entered.

  2. He is not Jamaican????? Dont tell me that he is from Cayman? I thought we Jamaicans commited all or most of the crimes in Cayman, which is the reason cited for not wanting to give us visas. I’m just saying….
