Spikefest will net more fans

Volleyball fans are excited that the Cayman Airways Spikefest indoor tournament is back for the second year in a row this weekend. The tournament is at the Sir Vassel Johnson Hall at the UCCI from 4-6 November and admission is free.

“We are very excited to host this event again this year and look forward to high level competition with the Cayman Islands teams challenging for the gold medal,” said

Fareed Hosein, tournament director and referee. “The Cayman Islands Volleyball Federation has worked tirelessly to bring this event along with the NORCECA beach competitions to showcase the sport to all ages in the Cayman Islands and to use this as a platform for sports tourism.”

The volleyball federation introduced this tournament to ensure the indoor version of the game is showcased here and provide a highly competitive tournament for Cayman teams that compete in this format. It’s also in conjunction with the federation’s mandate to introduce the game to the youth and promote participation in sports at all levels.

“I believe this tournament is limitless in the number of teams and countries that can visit,” added Hosein. “We have already started talking to Canada and the USA to send teams for future events.”

Last year the women’s competition was won by the University of West Indies, Cayman teams were second and third. The men’s was won by Caribbean All Stars and Cayman came second.

Noel Williams, the volleyball president, said: “As well as this tournament, there will be three international volleyball tournaments with the Continental Cup Olympic Caribbean Qualifier to be held 2-4 December at Public Beach.

“For this weekend, the Cayman teams will be very competitive and will be in the mix for the medals. The public is encouraged to attend the event as CIVF brings these international tournaments to the Cayman Islands and with the help of the sponsors are able to ensure admission is free.”

Volleyball is really mushrooming here. Kennedy McGowan, vice-president of the volleyball federation, has mandated for 2011 that the kids programmes be developed and sustained to ensure continuous involvement at a youth level. Presently there are kids clinics every Saturday morning and they hold summer camps in July and August.

International female and male teams coming from the region, including players from Bahamas, Jamaica and Trinidad along with the Cayman Islands teams.

Admission is free. Round robin play on Friday and Saturday with playoffs beginning on Sunday, the finals are scheduled for 5pm for women’s and 6pm for men’s on Sunday. First Cayman Islands team match will be men’s at 5pm and women’s at 6pm.
