The Breeze Fusion Run, organised by Radio Cayman, was blessed with dry, sunny weather for a change and as a result had an exceptional turn out of around 100 runners.
The two mile run and walk was for two good causes. Starting from John Gray High School on Walkers Road on Saturday, it was well supported by politicians, athletes from other sports and community figures. The Governor, Duncan Taylor, certainly had a busy weekend. He Breezed in the morning, then swam the CUC 800 metres in the afternoon then did the swim leg for the Okay Man team in the Cayman Triathlon on Sunday which they won. If there was an Olympics for only the world’s governors he would certainly be a medal prospect.
Winner was Jason Saunders in 11 minutes 2 seconds, ahead of Derek Larner (11.12) and Carl Grant (11.17). First woman home was Imelda Clarke (12.19), followed by Tiffany Cole (12.37) and then little Amy Clarke (13.23).
Minister of Sports Mark Scotland jogged around the Breeze run with Thomas Ebanks, president of the boxing association and Mike Adam, minister of community affairs and housing, walked round. Also spotted running were Nikolai Hill, Tom Gammage, Emily Davies, Alfredo Whittaker and Dr Dalton Watler. The usual speedy Ray Welds took it easy, saving himself for the triathlon the next day in which he came second in the sprint event.
Scotland said: “This was great. A very good turn out and I have to commend Radio Cayman for their efforts in encouraging exercise and living healthily. I saw all ages out here. There was a guy 64 years old ahead of me and a 14-year-old right behind me, so it’s good to see it all mixed up.
“The Breeze organisers invite me to these fun runs all the time but for some reason I wasn’t here for the last two so I committed for this one. Obviously, I don’t get to as many as I’d like to so I’d like to start with the shorter ones. I’ll wait for the 5ks and 10ks in the future.”
When asked about doing the Cayman Marathon next month, Scotland laughed. “Maybe in a car!”
Norma McField is the director of broadcasting at Radio Cayman. She said: “We were so pleased with the turn out and especially happy because there was no rain. Previous years we’ve always been wet and soaking. I’m so grateful for the turn out and the sponsors were awesome. It was great to see the Governor and Mr Scotland running and Mr Adam walking. I wish more people, especially the Cabinet would come out.
“The Breeze run is a fantastic thing to support and this year we’re giving funds to the Kiwanis for their mobile book programme and we’re also giving part of the proceeds to the NCVO for all of their fantastic projects. We’re hoping to give each $1,000 this year.”
