Cliff Weeks has been in motorsports for about four years and finally he has bragging rights.
Weeks, 38, was the big winner at last weekend’s Monster Dash drag race at the Breakers Speedway 1/8 mile track. Put on by the Cayman Islands Drag Racing Association, he would claim the A class in his Mitsubishi Evolution III over Ronnie Forbes and his Mercedes Benz.
Weeks, a noted darts player, states the success has been a long time coming.
“It feels good to be a champion at last,” Weeks said. “I’m the man to beat for weeks! I’m going to remember this for awhile.
“Everything about my car is the same, except for a bigger turbo. I know on 11 December there will be more coming. I expect bigger and better cars to come and I have to step up.”
In addition to Weeks, the other winners were Donald Francis in the B division, Tynsia Forsythe and her Mitsubishi Evo III in the C class (who beat Minroy Hydes and his Toyota Starlet), Edison Bodden and his Honda Civic Type-R in the D category and Michael Swaby and his Suzuki Hayabusa in the motorcycle segment.
Breakers had a solid turnout with hundreds of spectators. Although big guns like Sammy Jackson (and his Chevy Camaro) and Tom Kirkconnell (in the Kirk Express Honda Civic) were missing, the competition field was impressive nonetheless. Among the onlookers impressed with the day’s action were Serena Yates and Matthew Barnett.
Yates, who burst onto the sports scene this year as a flag football player, states the event was entertaining.
“It was pretty exciting, Donald rocks,” Yates said. “Also my fiancé Smarnell Thomas did well to run a 8.097 second time in his Honda Civic Type-R. It was really entertaining as Tynisa was a diva racing against the guys.”
Barnett, who took in the action with his fiancé Chandi Spence, had similar sentiments.
“The race was good and the racers did well,” Barnett said. “I’m looking forward to this. I used to race a lot of things, including a Civic and Integra Type-R. Hopefully my race days are not over and there might be something in production later on.”
