We can hear the CAVE people already.
CAVE, for those who haven’t heard of it, stands for
Citizens Against Virtually Everything. We have a very active chapter of CAVE
right here in the Cayman Islands.
Cayman’s CAVE people are generally against any kind of
change, whether it’s necessary or not, or whether it’s needed or not.
Since we are living in times of rapid change, Cayman’s CAVE
people are not a happy bunch these days. The fact that the North Sound Club
Golf Course is facing change will only add to their unhappiness.
North Sound Club owner Mike Ryan says unless he gets
support from the government to help make the golf course financially viable, it
will close. As Cayman’s only championship 18-hole course, this would be an
undesirable thing for many residents and tourists.
Mr. Ryan says although he recognises the importance of the
North Sound Club to Cayman, he is losing $60,000 to $100,000 a month running
the golf course and he simply can’t do that any longer. Unless something
changes, he said the course will close.
Some – like Cayman’s CAVE people – will howl in disapproval
if the course closes. They’ll also howl in disapproval if the government
decides to support the golf course by giving Mr. Ryan what he asks – the right
for Dragon Bay to make its own water and that the leasehold property be
converted to freehold. No matter what the government decides, it can expect to
hear the wrath of the CAVE people.
This decision would be unnecessary if Cayman had a
municipal golf course, but there is no way the government could afford to
purchase a large tract of property and develop one, or even operate it.
If people accept having an 18-hole championship golf course
is something Cayman needs for its residents and tourism product, then it would
seem reasonable that the government partner with the private sector to ensure
the country has this important amenity. No private sector business is a charity
and unless it can make a profit, it closes. Sometimes change is inevitable and
there’s nothing the CAVE people can do to change that fact.

Mike Ryan is not exactly what you would call believable. If he’s not making money on that golf course, he can close it or sell it, and move on.
Others will take up the challenge.
This is just a move to up the ante and put pressure on government as he continues his land grab. I find it strange that the editors of the Cayman Compass would frame the discussion in terms of the CAVE people of Cayman. They certainly do exist, but they’ve been more active in the South Sound, than on the golf course.
HAHAHAH cave people…brilliant!
*golf claps
Thank you Compass for making me spit my coffee out onto my monitor.
Excellent description for those errrr….Cave people 8)
By giving objectors a collective name or acronym you are attempting to dismiss and denigrate their views as a collective. Its much easier to brush off any oposing view by saying ‘oh the are just a bunch of CAVE’s or NIMBY’s’ rather than addressing any particular argument.
But you probably knew that right?
Mr Ryan must have known how much the golf course cost to run before buying it, he must have known he was buying leasehold and not freehold so what’s changed? Did he buy it knowing he would lose money, did he buy it intent on getting the changes now being persued, did a political ally fail to deliver on a promise, one can only speculate, and it is only speculation!
Government will not cave in to this antic, and Caymanians see right through this reverse psychology editor we have been called worst..
If we stand for anything it should be to keep as much as the crown land as possible for the future of our children and out country.. If his business case which earned him the concession for lease of the land was not sound, why would free-hold make a better case except for the sale of the property..
The cave people have been more active trying to get rid of Caymanians and taking their bread and butter from them, that’s CAVE PEOPLE. coming out of their caves whether it be an editor’s cave or not but they certainly can’t hide from the public after using such insulting language.
The Compass Editor should apologize.
I’m curious I’d like to see the history on this piece of property and I have a good feeling that it is. He may never be able to purchase it if it is as controversial as I think it could very well be. It could be a can of worms. I’d like the auditor General to investigate the history of this particular piece of land.

Does the Compass have any proof of this, or should we just accept developers at their word?
CAVE people is appropriate, since we must be back in the Stone Age if that passed the sniff test for an Editorial.
I must say that I was disappointed in one of Cayman’s only sociologists Dr.Frank Mcfield and Ms.Lorna Bush two Caymanians themselves, they were hosting their talk show on Radio Csyman on Thursday afternoon. These obviously UDP party members supported 100% Caymanians being called names Cave People by the Compass’s Editor in Thursday’s edition. This country is at its lowest low when people are willing to sell their people out for party politics. At least we have a good idea who not to vote for in 2013 since politicians are now looking down on those who voted for them in the past and now those same politicians or politician is throwing Caymanians under the bus for protesting against Emerald sound development that is a threat to the safety of the people during a hurricane.
We cannot vote for people with these kinds of mentality, good God No! We must vote for candidates that are pro-Caymanian.Not switching it off and onn conveniently to please the UDP and its New Caymanian or foreign following of bullies.
