Billed as a significant competition, the three-on-three basketball tournament at Governor’s Square instead was a nonevent.
A poor turnout forced officials from the Cayman Islands Basketball Association to cancel the tournament last Saturday. Roughly four teams came out, two male and two female, on a day that sported ideal weather conditions.
Among those that turned up was basketball legend Ovaine Monteith, 45, who stated the cancellation was surprising.
“It never worked at all, I’m not sure what happened there,” Monteith said. “It was a good location and it could get people aware (of the sport). They had four categories and I was competing in the 40 and over segment.
“The location may have had an impact and the time of day may have turned some off. I was not bothered by the playing conditions. Yes, it was a narrow space to play in and I don’t like to play in the sun. But to do so once in awhile is fine.”
Monteith was one of many notable faces in basketball to make an appearance. Miguel Pitta, referee Courtney Wisdom and Philip Wilson showed up on the men’s side. For the ladies the Dominos Lady Heels came out in force through Dionne Anglin, Joanne Remillard and Kathy Miller.
Director of Sports Collin Anglin mentioned in passing that the association would plan a similar event aimed at kids in the future.
