The Glovernauts have always been a good softball team and now they have a championship to back it up.
On Monday, the Glovernauts claimed the B league title in the Fall Adult Co-ed Softball League. Put on by the Cayman Islands Little League, the competition saw the final stages of its postseason take place this week at the Field of Dreams in George Town.
The Glovernauts would beat the Maples Sluggers 11-8 in seven innings. The hero for the Glovernauts would be Tarrah Crowley, who had the game-winning grand slam with her team down a run. For Crowley the victory is a long time coming.
“There was definitely a little pressure and I fought my nerves,” Crowley said. “I was excited to bat. I had a good feeling and everything worked out. The pitcher was good.
“I’m happy and I was on the team last year. We’ve been in the finals before and didn’t win it. We never clinched it before and I’m glad we did this time.”
Monday’s contest was a back-and-forth affair. Both teams hit the ball well off pitchers Shawn Pitterson (Maples) and Furius Whelan (Glovernauts). Maples’ Nicholas Roberts delivered many clutch at-bats and seemed to have clinched another championship for the Sluggers with a go-ahead solo home run in the top of the seventh. However the Glovernauts quickly strung together hits and Crowley capped off the rally with a bases-clearing knock to the outfield.
The final puts an end to what was a solid campaign for both squads in the B1 division. The Glovernauts (7-5) and Maples (6-6) were fourth and fifth respectively in the five-team group. The playoffs would see both produce stellar wins as the Glovernauts downed division frontrunners the BritCay Premiums and Coors Light Chuggers while the Sluggers beat the Master Batters and team Dart.
