Unity netball club recently displayed its desire for more community spirit in the Cayman Islands.
The side successfully hosted a fundraiser rally during the Remembrance Day public holiday. The New Testament Church in George Town saw netball matches throughout the day with food on sale.
On hand for the rally was Minister of Sport Mark Scotland, who states the endeavour is a positive for Cayman as a whole.
“I want to commend Unity and the church for organising the community competition, it was very well attended,” Scotland said. “It shows their commitment to the community, not just in the spiritual sense, but also in encouraging healthy, active lifestyles.
“I was also impressed by the wide cross-section of people that participated – from very young to not so young and male and female participants in the netball competition. I can only encourage other churches to open their doors up to the community in the same way to offer sports and other programmes.”
A number of clubs on the local netball scene participated. Roma, the reigning national champions, would emerge the rally winners with team Sheree second and Rising Stars third. Roma’s offensive dynamo Kay Copeland would be awarded best shooter while Kerry Scarlett would earn the best defender prize. The competition also attracted newcomers to the sport such as Faith Cathedral Deliverance Centre.
Unity team manager and president Faye Green states the event went as good as expected.
“It was a good day and very successful,” Green said. “All of the food sell off and the community came together. From small kids to young people and adults, it was impressive.
“In our little community it was good that everyone came for a nice, fun day. We were honoured to have Minister Scotland there to spend part of his day with us.”
Next up is the start of the 2011-2012 netball season, after the annual opening parade next Saturday, 26 November at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex.
