A local insurance company wants to promote better driving among young people.
Saxon Motor and General Insurance Company Ltd recently launched its Drivers Education programme with cosponsors dms Organization Ltd, Prestige Motors, the Ministry of Education, Royal Cayman Islands Police Service and the Department of Vehicle and Drivers’ Licensing.
The launch took place with a presentation to the Year 11 students at John Gray and Clifton Hunter high schools. According to Saxon CEO Brian Williams, the unique programme and presentation were well-received by students.
“It is the culmination of a community effort by business, government, and education,” Mr. Williams said. “We’re all partnering with a common commitment to young drivers and road safety for all in the Cayman Islands.”
The programme will be rolled out in two phases. The first phase includes a six-week, one-hour per week practical driver education training from senior inspectors Roy Bush and Burmon Scott from the Department of Vehicle and Drivers’ Licensing.
The second phase will take place in the second half of the school year and it will encompass the practical side led by co-sponsor Prestige Motors.
Students will learn road safety as both a passenger and a driver using a theoretical approach. The students who demonstrate knowledge and responsible driving awareness may then enrol in the practical portion of the Drivers Education Programme. In this second phase of the programme, students will have one-on-one training, learning to drive with qualified volunteer drivers.
Established in 1967, Saxon is the only wholly Caymanian owned insurance company in the Cayman Islands.
