The animals housed at the Cayman Islands Humane Society will get 26.2 miles of support from local runner Louane Martins.
She will be running the Intertrust Cayman Islands Marathon on Sunday to raise money for the organisation and despite this being her first full marathon she is confident she will complete the course.
“I’m not a good runner, so I just aim to finish. I just want to challenge myself, but I have six hours to finish, so I should be good,” she laughed.
Ms Martins’ decision to run for charity came after reading articles in the local media on people raising money for charities through their athletic endeavours.
“I went to the Humane Society and told them my idea and they said that people have done it in the past, so I decided that I want to do it this year,” she said.
Apart from helping the animals at the shelter, Ms Martins said running for charity will help her during the marathon.
“It gives me more motivation in case I think to give up,” she said.
Even though running the marathon to help out the animals at the shelter may seem like the actions of someone dedicated to animal welfare, Ms Martins said it is just her love of dogs that motivated her to take up the challenge.
“I’ve been to the Humane Society a few times to check on the dogs and I’ve bought stuff from the Thrift Shop and from the Book Loft, but I never really went to volunteer,” she said.
Anyone interested in assisting Ms Martins in her fundraising efforts can contact the Cayman Islands Humane Society on 949-1461 to pledge their support.
