School embraces virtual learning

St. Ignatius Catholic School has made progress with its virtual learning environment project that began installation in April.

The overall virtual learning environment has now become the I-site learning platform. It allows students and teachers access to laptop computers and social networkin, all of which is monitored and filtered through a St. Ignatius firewall to ensure quality, credibility and safety for the students.

The new, personalised networking site that has been added to the St. Ignatius website allows parents, teachers and students access to up-to-date lessons, homework, school projects and a variety of other tools, all meant to help the learning process.

Every student in Year 7 and above will receive a laptop with an eight-hour battery to be used in class, at home or any place with a wireless connection. Younger students and their parents will also have access to the virtual learning environment.

St. Ignatius teacher and Director of Technology Mick Whyte headed up the new programme.

“I am… pleased to announce that as part of the website we will be highlighting the work of local organizations who are also committed to helping young people,” he said. “Once again, this is innovative and evidence of a fresh approach.”

The project is entering its second phase with training for students, teachers and parents taking place soon.

“We are working closely with the National Drug Council at the present time who have just completed a complete rebrand including a new logo,” Mr. Whyte added. The National Drug Council’s Executive Director Joan West-Dacres has been working with Mr. Whyte.

“The National Drug Council continues to partner with the private sector educational facilities in ongoing efforts to provide information and reduce the impacts of drugs on youth and our communities,” she said. “We are pleased to continue both prevention and policy initiatives with the school. To this end we have provided feedback and suggestions to the St. Ignatius Draft School Drugs Policy which was recently reviewed.” The new logo can now be seen for the first time on their website www.st-ignatius.com/new_site.
