Speed should be on fine display this weekend.
In addition to Jet Around Cayman a drag race is slated to take place at Breakers Speedway. Before personal watercrafts exceed 60mph around Grand Cayman on Monday 13 June, racers will be looking to get to 100mph and beyond at the 1/8 mile track on Sunday 12 June.
Weather permitting, action kicks off at 2pm with gates opening at 12noon and qualifying taking place at 1pm. Admission is $10 and $5 pit passes are also available. Organizing the race is the Cayman Islands Drag Racing Association, a motorsports group formed earlier this year. At the head of it is local attorney and noted racer Sammy Jackson.
Jackson states he expects a solid turnout.
“I’m pretty certain there will be attempts at a next record,” Jackson said. “A lot of guys have done well in the lower second classes. There might be some new cars in the five second class. Personally I’m expecting Junior Hydes to run better in his Mustang. Also I’m anxious for Ronald Forbes to debut his Mercedes Benz with the Chevrolet engine.
“We’re using the same fees and classes as last time and we’re hoping for the same level of success or better in terms of racer and crowd participation. We plan to do more for the spectators this time. We want to use more tents for families as we realize it gets hot at times. We also hope to have an improved concession area with the help of track owner Robert Campbell.”
Aside from his duties linked to organizing the meet, Jackson will also race a white Chevrolet Camaro. That car ended up second-best to fellow West Bayer Billy Ebanks and his Dodge Daytona at the last meet in March. Ebanks won the meet’s fastest bracket in an approximate time of 5.700 seconds, well off his personal best of 5.567s (the current record for the fastest overall time at Breakers).
Jackson states he is eager to battle Ebanks on the track.
“Billy is the guy I’m gunning for. Based on mathematical calculations I’ve done, I should comfortably run a 5.5s, traction permitting. If you can run 125mph on a 1/8 track like I have then you should run a mid five second time.”
