Resident slams door on robbers

A George Town resident foiled two armed robbers by slamming the door on them and running inside to call the police Thursday evening.

Royal Cayman Islands Police officers said the occupant of the home on Greenwood Drive was approached by two men who wore masks and appeared to be carrying firearms.

The home occupant, who had just returned home from shopping, went inside and slammed the door. One of the suspects allegedly shouted “open the door and give us the money”, police said.

The victim went inside stating they were going to call the police. While in the kitchen, the home’s occupant noted that the two men were standing by the kitchen window. One of the suspects appeared to point a weapon at the window and said “open the door or we are going to shoot”, according to police.

As soon as the home’s occupant called police, the suspects disappeared.

No one was hurt and no shots were fired in the attempted robbery.

  1. We are moving from robberies of businesses to home invasions. Very disturbing. Also disturbing is that it seems that every day (or at the very least, four out of five days) there is a story in the paper about a robbery.

The most disturbing thing, though, is that we never hear anything from the police or the government about what they are doing to stop the problem and turn the tide of crime that is sweeping over this island.

The number one function of government is to keep its citizens and residents safe. The lack of response from the current government shows a complete and total disregard for this obligation.

  2. This is starting to sound like reading my Chicago newspaper. I wonder if these thugs realize the damage they are causing beyond the obvious. If this keeps up, you can count on tourism to seriously drop off. If they think they have to rob people because they can’t find a job now, wait until the tourists stop coming. What percentage of GC’s income is from tourism again? Hmmm … maybe the police should start thinking about that and step up to the plate.

  3. Escape, you are giving these simpleton thugs waaaaay to much credit. Do you think that for a second they have taken into consideration the effects of their actions on tourism or on the country’s reputation as a whole? Not for a second … these simpletons get their instant gratification and then on to the next hit.

If they’re starting to target private homes, sooner or later they’re gonna be staring down the barrel of an armed citizen who’s not gonna wait for the cops to handle business. I’m looking forward to reading that headline again.

  4. Escape The Cold: the answer is no they don’t care. Anyone one with an incomprehensible and utterly despicable degree of selfishness to rob someone in their homes, certainly doesn’t concern themselves with the negative macro effects their lowly and cowardly actions have on the country.

The solution for these people isn’t rehabilitation (they’re not interested in rehabilitation, they’re interested in quick cash from your pockets), the solution was demonstrated to us by an older gentlemen recently who courageously demonstrated how effective unloading a shotgun in their faces can be. One less scum bag on the street, and a few more starting to question whether their are going to break in another house or not.

Secondly, get rid of this commissioner, he’s purely academic with flawed UK ideologies to deal with this type of lowlife and violent crime.

  5. I really don;t see what the hold up is with significantly stiffening the penalties towards armed crimes.

These people are the lowest form of life and should be removed from society entirely. these people have no care in the world whether they people they tried to rob had children to feed, to school, they have no idea whether that family was struggling financially suring these tough times.

It sicken me to hear some talk about how these economic circumstances is somehow creating this criminal behavior. IT DOESN’T!! these were scum bags to start, are sum bags and will continue to be scum bags until the law come slamming down on them with serious consequences or a shotgun gets unloaded in their faces.

A law needs to be amended to give an automatic life imprisonment for armed robberies and they should be shipped to Cuba for pennies on the dollar. If the UK objects, ship them to them to the UK, and have them pay for their sorry asses.

So let’s do that a couple of times, and let see what happens to these armed robberies.

  6. Trust me, if things continue the way they are going now, you won’t have long to wait.

Why do you think that certain homes and businesses are not targeted by these low-lives ?

Even in the areas in which they live ?

Let me tell you why; because they know who lives there and owns those businesses…

And those people will only be calling the police to take a dead body out of their premises.

Trust me when I tell you this as someone who knows.

Who I feel sorry for are the helpless, defenseless victims who actually do need and depend on the police for protection.
