The 2011 Dominos Warriors are a rare collection of experience and athleticism.
Throughout the roster are names synonymous with local basketball. For starters there is a collection of former George Town Sports Club players in Jasen Campbell, Jorge Ebanks, Lloyd Samuels and Antonio Thompson. All helped make George Town into the undisputed dynasty of local hoops over the last decade with some five straight championships.
Samuels had a phenomenal division one national men’s basketball league finals in his return home on school break from Tennessee’s Kings College. Against the former two-time champs Wolves, he notched 32 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists during a two-game sweep. Samuels states this year’s success was something planned from awhile ago.
“I’m done with basketball in Tennessee and I have five classes left until I graduate in December,” Samuels said. “This is my second championship at the men’s level and my first with Dominos. The last championship I had was three years ago with George Town. Jerome Narcisse, Jorge (Ebanks) and I had been planning for this moment since last year or so.
“To have it all come together is hard to explain. I’m so happy and I don’t have the words to explain this right now.”
Both Ebanks and Narcisse had stellar showings against the Wolves. Ebanks, the finals Most Valuable Player, was top scorer in both contests with 19 points in game one and 36 points in game two. Narcisse had a solid 18 points and eight rebounds in game one plus 22 points and nine rebounds in game two.
The brilliance of Narcisse comes after the West Bayer transformed into an elite player over the last four years. The Southwestern Oklahoma State University student has been a huge presence in the men’s league the last three seasons, making a finals appearance with Dominos last year. The Warriors’ 2010 finals defeat at the hands of the Wolves was a motivating factor for Narcisse.
“I just wanted it badly with these guys,” Narcisse said. “We fought hard and we were short last time. But we came extra hard and came more hungry this year. I felt I did good and I was solid in the series. I came out, moved around the post and I helped my team win.”
Most of the other talents were on the 2010 squad. Among them were team captain and Director of Sports Collin Anglin, agile big man Kenvall Bryan, long-time post presence Rotando Thompson, sharpshooter Luigi Moxam and long-serving sub Horace Walters. 2011 marks the first title season in eight years for Anglin, the second in Walters’ career and the first in a Dominos uniform for Bryan, Moxam and Thompson (a former member of the Esso Blazers who had lost to the Wolves on two prior occasions in the finals).
A pair of rookie players get to enjoy this year’s triumphs in Borislav Djordjic and Kadane Hall. Djordjic, from Serbia, was a double-double machine in the regular season while Hall made the jump from the youth ranks. Sebastian Mena is no rookie having played for the Silver Bullets in past seasons but was a new addition to the club this year.
Not to be forgotten is the work of head coach and Director of Tourism Shomari Scott and team sponsor Joel Jefferson (who stepped in and coached the side in game two).
