Earlier this year, Premier McKeeva Bush announced that the Government would be working with Dart (Realty) Cayman Ltd. to develop a plan to remediate, cap and close the George Town Landfill.
It is well known that over the past 20 years, the country has been challenged to implement the various solutions identified by successive administrations. Even in 2008, the previous administration’s proposed solution was to implement a Waste to Energy solution but they were not able to implement this solution. In 2010, Government issued a Request For Proposal to select to partner/provider to provide a solution using WTE at the existing site and the selected partner was announced in December.
In January 2011, in a speech at the Fidelity Business Outlook Conference, the Premier announced that his administration made a policy decision to consider siting a new properly designed and engineered facility in a new location and accepted Dart’s offer to assist with the remediation, cap and closure of the landfill and necessarily, assist with set up a facility in a new location. As it relates to the landfill, the Government has not yet shared any details on who will ultimately be involved in the GTLF.
However, on the Dart side, they are standing by, ready to respond to Government when the call comes. Dart has started to assemble a team of experts that will work in collaboration with the Government’s team and any Government selected third parties. Dart is prepared to pay for the costs of the necessary site characterisation studies and environmental investigations, a critical first step in informing and developing any recommended remediation programmes for this 40 year old site. Dart has offered to assist with the remediation works including capping and closing and after care management of the site for up to 20 years.

What happened to the desire to implement a Waste to Energy system? Why do we not have plans of the new Plasma Gasification Plant to review? Why isn’t the CUC considering waste management as part of it’s expansion? Dart’s gorgeous school is sitting right beside the toxic hill. Putting grass on the hill and venting out the methane will not make the mess go away. Moving our garbage to another location on-island will not solve the long term problem. We are a consuming nation, our waste piles are going to continue to build. If we dont create enough ourselves to make this a viable idea, why not charge cruise ships to dump here too? We NEED a waste to energy system and frankly, I feel we need it NOW.
OR, perhaps the government could simply fund a National Heavy Metal Chelation program for every resident instead.
Go Dart!!!
I am with you Coyote on the gasification front, it has to be one of the most underutilized technologies that has beed around atleast 100 years or more. The Nazi’s were converting coal to liquid fuel when everyone cut them off from oil based fuels in the early 1900’s. South Africa did the same thing during apartheid and are still doing so using various feedstocks (coal, natural gas, garbage, sewer sludge, biomass, etc)and ending up with cleaner, better, renewable liquid fuels and here we are wasting our waste and importing substandard fuels, paying through the nose for them too.
Its not even a scalability issue because people had them mounted to thier cars back in the day and running off dried wood!!
Hopefully Dart can sell the methane to CUC for one of thier turbines and reduce everyones electric bill and increase the air quality at the same time.
I support support this project 110% and Dart will get ‘er done!!
