The annual Olympic Day 5k run is staged on Sunday and the great attraction apart from the marvellous community spirit it evokes is that participation is free. All entrants are encouraged to represent their country with costume, flags or symbols.
It is sponsored by the Cayman Islands Olympic Committee and organised by the Phoenix Athletic Club and starts near the Truman Bodden Sports Complex. Participants will move to Aspiration Drive for the run which begins at 5pm. The 3.1 mile loop course will return to finish at the sports complex.
Commemorative trophies will be awarded to the first five male and first five female finishers. Random theme-related prizes will also be distributed.
All starters will receive an event shirt and a certificate of participation and refreshments will also be enjoyed.
The event is always well supported with many making the effort to turn up in national colours. Particularly keen are the Indians and Mexicans who also have a strong presence at the Cayman Islands Marathon at the water stops.
If Englishman Colin Wilson turns up he will be in his Union Jack shorts, as usual. It may be his last Olympic Day run because he is returning to blighty next month.
Apart from the Cayman Islands, many Caribbean countries wear their colours with pride, particularly Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago and Guyana.
Registration is possible on www.caymanactive.com until noon Friday. Registration on event day will be conducted from 3:30pm until 4:45pm at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex. For more information, call 946-6984 or 945-3970.
