EY announces Cayman scholarship recipients

Leana Smith and Maria Lewis are this year’s recipients of the EY Cayman Scholarship.

The scholarship is worth up to US$30,000 annually for a maximum of five years until the recipient has completed the minimum educational requirement to qualify as a certified public accountant.

It further includes an eight- to 10-week summer internship to gain practical experience, and an offer of full-time employment at EY upon successful completion of the university programme, according to a press release.

Smith is in her final year of her business and management bachelor’s degree at the University of Kent, England. She is a returning EY intern, previously gaining experience on the assurance team, and this summer joined the strategy and transactions team, before commencing her master’s degree this fall in corporate finance at Queen Mary University.

Lewis is a second-year accounting and finance bachelor’s degree student at Newcastle University. In 2019, she placed third in the CFA Ethics Challenge, sponsored by EY, and participated in the Cayman Finance Programme which allowed her to be mentored by one of EY’s associate partners.

Butterfield branch service hours changed

Butterfield announced that from Monday, 18 Oct., and until further notice, its branches will operate at reduced hours.

Butterfield’s banking centres will now be open 9am-3pm, Monday to Friday. To protect members of the public and the bank’s employees, capacity remains reduced, and clients must continue to wear a mask and follow all other COVID-19 guidance when visiting Butterfield branches.

To reduce wait times, customers should, if possible, use Butterfield’s alternate banking channels, like ATMs, online or mobile banking. Clients wishing to make deposits will be able to continue using Butterfield ATMs or commercial drop boxes at Butterfield Place, Camana Bay, Governors Square or Midtown Plaza.

Other banking services are available as normal, Butterfield said. 

Appleby advises on establishing Cayman reinsurer

Appleby, in a press release, said it has advised Brookfield Asset Management Inc on the establishment of North End Re (Cayman) SPC, a Cayman Islands reinsurer licensed by the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority.

North End Re is an indirect subsidiary of Brookfield Asset Management Reinsurance Partners Ltd. that in March was assigned a preliminary credit assessment by AM Best with a Financial Strength Assessment of A- and a Long-Term Issuer Credit Assessment of a-.

Brookfield is a Canadian-headquartered alternative asset manager that has around $575 billion of assets under management.

North End Re is a segregated portfolio company that is part of the asset manager’s push into life and annuities reinsurance.

SteppingStones provides education grant

SteppingStones has given its annual education grant to Halle Whittaker to support the pursuit of her educational goals at the University of Manchester.

The CI$5,000 SteppingStones Education Grant can be used toward any course of study and is awarded annually to a Caymanian student, aged 18 to 25, who has shown academic achievement and community leadership.

“For over 15 years SteppingStones has been dedicated to helping Caymanians achieve success through career placement and this is one more way we can help forge this path to success.” said Pam Abbott, SteppingStones general manager. “We are grateful to be able to assist young Caymanians achieve their academic dreams and are honored to help make Halle’s dreams become a reality.”
