A total of 267 youth players turned out to participate in the 2021-22 youth rugby season on Saturday, 6 Nov.

Abiding by COVID-19 regulations, Edward Westin, rugby youth development manager, staggered the times for different age groups, in order to limit the number of players gathering at a time.

“So, each hour we have changeover with the teams,” Westin told the Cayman Compass. “So, keeping the times separated and making sure that we…keep everybody safe.”

The season has six divisions: U6, U8, U10, U12, U14 and U16, for both boys and girls. According to Westin, the season’s success is a result of building momentum and community within the sport.

“It’s getting better with the turnout each season, especially last year with the introduction of leagues with different age groups,” he said. Adding that parent involvement brings a “sense of community.”

The U16 girls are the latest installment of Cayman’s rugby women’s programme that has been gaining traction since Mercedes Foy joined the union as female manager.

The season will run until March 2022.
