A player from the Cayman Islands men’s national rugby squad has tested positive for the Omicron variant.
Cayman’s director of rugby Jovan Bowles confirmed the single case to the Cayman Compass over the weekend, stating the player “is in isolation, he does not have any serious symptoms, so we are very grateful for that”.
It follows a government announcement that, as of Saturday, 18 Dec., the jurisdiction had confirmed a total of four people had contracted the variant, with another 23 potential cases identified.
The Cayman national men’s rugby team recently travelled with 23 players, for a 15s test match against Mexico, in Mexico City on, 11 Dec.
“Obviously, with leaving the island, it’s very important that we followed protocol,” Bowles said. “The boys were covered with regards to their PCR testing before they left. The morning of our travel back, we did another full PCR test for all the squad members…Obviously, receiving their negative PCR testing on that morning.”
However, according to Bowles, two days after arriving back in Cayman, as per government protocols, a positive was detected. The squad was put into isolation, where they were all tested.
On Monday, 20 Dec., Bowles confirmed that everyone on the team, besides the COVID-positive player who remains in quarantine, had all tested negative.
“We are keeping tabs on everyone and making sure that they are all healthy and following all the requirements that government has given us,” he said.
