A wanted man who challenged police at knifepoint and evaded capture on Thursday afternoon has now been arrested.

A police statement Friday night confirmed the arrest of the 44-year-old George Town man, who remains in police custody pending investigations.

His identity has not been released.

Police said the man was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and threats to kill, in relation to the incident.

His arrest is also related to failing to appear in court.

The man was arrested shortly before 2pm Friday after he was located by firearms officers in the West Bay area.

The man was initially spotted by officers on Thursday on Elgin Avenue and upon approach he brandished a knife, prompting police officers to draw their tasers after he threatened them.

That incident happened near the Government Administration Building when officers were conducting “proactive patrols” in George Town.

The man fled on foot before officers could detain him in the vicinity of the passport office on Elgin Avenue.

No one was injured during that incident and the officers did not discharge any weapons.

After he evaded capture the search continued, eventually leading to his arrest.
