Cayman’s active COVID cases level out

The Public Health department reported 192 positive results from 1,382 COVID tests on Tuesday. All except one positive result were community cases.

Despite the new COVID positives, the number of active cases plateaued at 4,045, a decline by two from a day earlier.

It was the first drop in active cases in more than two months, indicating that the current COVID wave may be levelling out.

The share of COVID tests that are positive equally appears to have peaked at between 16.5% and just below 17% during the past three weeks.

However, hospitalisations increased by six, as a total of 29 COVID patients were admitted as of Tuesday morning. Chief Medical Officer Dr. John Lee yesterday expressed concern that many of the hospitalised patients were elderly.

The number of people over the age of 70, who tested positive, increased to 27 last week from only 16 and 17 in the first two weeks of November.

From 14 to 20 Nov., Cayman recorded an average of 153 new COVID cases each day, down from 178 and 202 new daily cases in the first and second week of November, respectively.

According to the data reported by Deputy Medical Officer of Health Dr. Eryka Simmons, as part of a weekly COVID-19 trends report, a consistent level of 66% of positive cases are unvaccinated. In the two previous weeks, 70% and 67% were not vaccinated.

The average age of positive cases of 31 remained unchanged from the previous week. The ages of positive cases ranged from three months to 94 years.

Of the 1,068 weekly total positives, six cases were younger than one year old, and 360, about one third, were under the age of 18.

Dr. Simmons urged residents to continue with personal prevention measures. “In the context of wide community transmission, Public Health is advising enhanced vigilance in prevention strategies,” she said. “If you are isolated or quarantined, you may still prevent ongoing transmission if you adhere to the recommendations. Wear your masks, use hand sanitiser and practice physical distance where possible.”

As of Tuesday, a total of 4,633 people in Cayman were in isolation either in a government facility or at home.

Dr. Simmons also noted that COVID-19 vaccination clinics continue. Find the latest schedule information here.
