Culture at the Cinema: Three screenings, two ballets, one location

Tickets for 'The Nutcracker' often sell out early.

Every month, Camana Bay Cinema hosts Culture at the Cinema, where audiences are transported to international theatres to watch award-winning productions.

In December, it will be featuring its traditional screening of ‘The Nutcracker’ by the Bolshoi (19 Dec. at 3:30pm and 7pm), but this year, ballet fans are in for an additional treat, with one showing of ‘Spartacus’, also by the world-famous dance company.

The beauty of watching these live-recorded productions in the cinema is the extraordinary perspective you get, thanks to professional cameras that have captured every moment on stage. You hear the audience reactions surrounding you, offering a truly immersive experience. It’s the closest thing to seeing it live without physically being in the Bolshoi Theatre.

‘Spartacus’

In Imperial Rome, led by Crassus, Spartacus and his wife Phrygia are reduced to slavery and are separated by slave dealers. His love for her and his desire for freedom lead him to revolt against the Roman army with the help of the other captives. But the treacherous Aegina, who seeks to conquer Crassus and gain power, will get in the way of Spartacus’s plan.

Huge in scale and spectacular in effect, ‘Spartacus’ is a true tour de force of a ballet, set to Aram Khachaturian’s superb score. With an incredible display of might from the four leading dancers to the entire corps de ballet and its passionate pas de deux, Spartacus is the ultimate spectacle of virtuosity and lyricism.
